I am only a Breath (Psalm 39)

V1 Please would you look out for me / and keep my tongue from sin;

a muzzle I will wear now / and put a bridle in

the worlds obsession with fame / has made me shut my mouth

not saying anything good / But it was all too loud

BR1] I am only a breath like all men on the earth

It’s been only a gasp Since my mother gave birth

We’re all rushing around getting more and more

But we really don’t know what we do it for

V2 my heart was burning with fire / And I was trying to think

And then I spoke right out loud / As I put down my drink
Show me my life’s end right now / I want to know how long –

I’ve got to go before death ; Before my final song

CH1 My hope is in you

Save me from all wickedness and bad things that I wanna do

my sin is my shame - don’t bring me down

For you are the one who has control

Take away this discipline and pain from me

‘ I am consumed I am rebuked

V3 I could not open my mouth / I was a ghostly shell

Look at the mess that I’m in / And I’m a fool as well

Before I’m going away for all eternity

Please hear my cry to you now to end my tragedy

BR1] I am only a breath like all men on the earth

It’s been only a gasp Since my mother gave birth

We’re all rushing around getting more and more

But we really don’t know what we do it for

V4 now we must learn that it’s true / each man is vanity

We cannot slow ourselves down in our profanity

All of our wealth will be gone in its totality

Theres nothing left of us now of our humanity

CH2 Even those who are rich they will lose all

Everything they’ve saved up all their money for

Just Vain to the core nothing but air

We’re all passing through taken away from everything lovely that we thought we knew

And I am the same so insecure [key change]

V5 each man and woman at best is simply vanity

We chase around after wealth and lose our sanity

We do not look up to you - in all your majesty

We are so Frail and we live in total fantasy

Words entirely based on Psalm 39. The Psalm says it all about human frailty.

Almost breathless delivery with the words tumbling out no break for instrumental until the very end
